Other Resources for Students of Sinhala:
Here are some online and book sources that I found very helpful. I'll list them in the order that I believe may be
easiest to go through. (That is, I'll list the most basic things first
and end with the more complicated/hard to follow sources.)
1.
http://www.speaksinhala.com/unit_1/unit_1intro.htm
This starts at the very basics but unfortunately, the people making the site stopped working on it a few years ago.
2.
http://fsi-language-courses.org/Content.php?page=Sinhala
This starts at a very basic level, providing opportunities to get used to the alphabet and be able to read the letters.
3.
There's a Phrasebook by Lonely Planet that is also very helpful. You
can buy it here:
http://shop.lonelyplanet.com/Primary/Product/Language_Guides/India_and_Central_Asia/PRD_PRD_1763/Sinhala+Phrasebook.jsp?bmUID=1257475934674
4.
"Let's Learn Sinhala" series by J.B.Disanayaka. There are 4 books in
the series. Their purpose is to teach all the letters of the alphabet,
but an especially great thing about this series is that it provides a
lot of vocabulary words that one can learn. (can get the first book here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Lets-Learn-Sinhala-Consonants-Sinhala-E/dp/9559817701/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1280271358&sr=1-2)
5.
"Say it in Sinhala" also by JBDisanayaka. This is more difficult simply
because it's very concise and hard to follow at times. I'd definitely
recommend getting it, though. (Can get it here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Say-Sinhala-English-Sinhalese-Classified-Vocabulary/dp/9558733407/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1280271358&sr=1-1)
6.
"A Comprehensive Grammar of the Sinhalese Language" You can buy it
here: http://www.dualj.com/item_details.aspx?ItemID=8120601068. I
mentioned this in one of my videos, it was written a long time ago and
it therefore a little tough to follow, but it's helpful.
7.
http://mylanguages.org/learn_sinhala.php This website has a lot of helpful information about the grammar as well as lots of vocabulary.
